Excel。 Power Query。 English SummaryEvery morning I send out a news digest in both Japanese and English. On Sunday evenings, a post about one tool that genuinely helps on the ground. And now and then, something I noticed while relearning, or a time things didn’t go as planned. I write here almost every day — and yet I realized I had never properly introduced the person doing the writing.Up until high school, I was in the sciences. Chemistry was my strongest subject, and for a while I thought about becoming a pharmacist. At the same time, I was drawn to making clothes. I grew up listening to my mother work her sewing machine, and by elementary school I was sewing my own clothes from books. I also loved looking after people — neighbours often asked me to babysit. But when it came time to choose a path, I chose childcare. I chose “being needed” over “what I loved.” Looking back, that was the shape of the decision.I began my career as a nursery teacher, then worked in administration, and later in care and welfare. I have changed jobs more than ten times — more than most, I know. Still, I always loved working with people. I tend to sense how someone is feeling without having to think about it, so I could meet children described as difficult, or people who don’t open up easily, without strain. Welfare work felt like my calling: being close to someone’s daily life, supporting them in being themselves.Years later, I took on a role at a care facility where I managed the team while still working the floor myself. About five years in, I struggled with the relationships around me and had to stop working for a while. I never imagined I would end up leaving the place I thought was my calling. For a time, I couldn’t think about much at all. When I began considering going back to work, something started to surface: I want to work more efficiently. I want to learn something new. All those hours in the field spent writing records, compiling numbers, copying the same information from one place to another — if those hours had been fewer, I would have had that much more time to face the people in front of me. That thought is what led me to start learning digital tools.None of it came naturally. “Programming is beyond me.” “Generative AI sounds difficult.” I was one of those people. But little by little, one thing at a time: Excel, Power Query, no-code tools, how the web works, and generative AI. Because I had always loved design, it spread to Adobe tools, Canva, Figma, and image generation. I understood almost nothing at first, but each time something worked, I thought: I could do it too. Looking back, I think I was slowly taking back what I had given up when I was young — learning the things I loved. Before I knew it, I was supporting digital transformation at small companies and teaching workshops. It seems I notice shifts in other people’s feelings easily. At the same time, when I find something new, I can’t sit still until I’ve tried it. The two look like opposites, but I recently learned there is a name for the combination: HSS-type HSE. My years working with people and my years learning digital tools probably come from the same place.I am not an IT expert. I picked things up one at a time, in the field. That is exactly why I can explain without technical jargon — I can say “this is that task you already do.” The place I want to stand is not the teacher’s place, but that of a colleague from the same field who has gone just a little further ahead. So I write here in the plainest words I can, and add phonetic readings only for names that are new or hard to guess at. I don’t add them to names like Google; adding them everywhere would only make the text harder to read.I still love making things. Sewing, baking bread, working with image generation AI, making LINE stickers. Moving my hands without knowing how it will turn out, and having something take shape at the end — that moment is still my favourite. Digital work, I think, is the same.Right now I’m making video guides on how to use a computer, for my husband. While doing that, I’ve started wanting to build a course that teaches through video — something people who aren’t confident with technology can learn at their own pace. You don’t have to change everything at once; just add the one color you need right now. That is “Palette Thinking,” and it is the way of learning I want to keep sharing. What you gave up can be taken back later. That much, I can say from my own experience. This has gotten long. The morning news, the Sunday tool posts, and posts like this one — they are all written by this person. Please stay with me, at whatever pace suits you. And if you’d like, tell me a little about yourself too. In the comments, or by replying to this email. This is a public episode.
