from The Sunday Session with Francesca Rudkin · host Newstalk ZB
Tell Me Lies by J.P.PomareFrom a Kiwi writer who lives and writes in Melbourne where this is set. It’s a novel about a psychologist who has the good life – successful practice, great family etc – but then someone chucks a Molotov cocktail into her house one night and some of her clients start behaving really strangely. Has lots of twists and turns and is really good. The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah Big, historical epic set in Texas during the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl years when drought crippled the state and people became desperate. Elsa Martinelli and her family decide to flee their farm and migrate to California for a better life – but they get there and there isn’t one. The only work is picking cotton but the farmers treat the people appallingly and labour is cheap, there’s always someone who will do the work for less – and Elsa finds herself caught up in the beginnings of a union movement. It’s really atmospheric – the descriptions about the dust storms are incredible, you just can’t imagine it.
