Joan's Picks: The Unfolding and Vital Signs
from The Sunday Session with Francesca Rudkin · host Newstalk ZB
The Unfolding by A.M.Homes – fiction, which opens on the day of the 2008 US Presidential election when The Big Guy and his wife and daughter are in Phoenix Arizona for John McCain’s victory party – except it isn’t a victory party as Obama wins and The Big Guy simply can’t believe that a Black man is going to occupy The White House. He’s a man of means and decides to get a few of his buddies together to make a plan for how to get America back on track. While his political world is falling apart so too is his personal life. It’s great satire, bitingly funny in parts, and quite profound. The author won the 2013 Women’s Prize for Fiction. Vital Signs by Izzy Lomax-Sawyers. This is her account of her first year as a Junior Doctor at Middlemore Hospital. I guess you could say it’s like a local version of This is Going to Hurt although it isn’t that funny, but gives a very real sense of the pressure they work under and what a tough, difficult job it is.
