La novela El roto, del escritor chileno Joaquín Edwards Bello (1887-1968) fue publicada por primera vez en 1920, pero estaba lejos de ser la versión definitiva. Con diversos cambios en las publicaciones siguientes, Edwards Bello reconoce en la edición de 1968 -el mismo año de su muerte- la definitiva. Esta novela se convierte entonces en una especie de proyecto de vida del autor, quien comienza a escribirla en 1912 (ocho años antes de ser publicada) y la siente finalizada cincuenta y seis años después. Con estos antecedentes, la edición crítica de esta novela emblemática del Chile del siglo XX nos presenta los desafíos del autor, los efectos del paso del tiempo y las estrategias creativas y literarias implementadas a lo largo de los años para lograr una novela definitiva, sin cambios ni arrepentimientos.
