Joe Budden, the rapper-turned-podcaster, has been charged with lewdness

from Spate Radio: The Hip Hop Podcast · host Antoine Maurice King

Joe Budden, the rapper-turned-podcaster, has been charged with lewdness following an alleged incident in New Jersey. According to a press release from the Edgewater Police Department, Budden was charged earlier this month in connection with an alleged event outside his neighbor’s property.Authorities claim that in the early hours of December 4, Budden stood completely naked outside his neighbor's apartment door, attempting multiple times to enter a code into their door keypad before returning to his own apartment across the hall. The incident was reportedly captured on the neighbor’s doorbell camera and viewed live by the resident and their two juvenile daughters. The Edgewater Police confirmed Budden was charged with lewdness, a disorderly persons offense. However, the department emphasized that these charges are accusations, and Budden is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. In response, Budden’s lawyer, Nima Ameri, criticized the decision to publicize the charges, calling it unnecessary and harmful. Speaking to TMZ, Ameri stated, “Mr. Budden is saddened by Police Chief Martin’s press release. He has been waiting weeks for his cross complaints to be processed, which include far more serious charges—potentially felonies—against the individuals behind these accusations.”Ameri accused Edgewater Police Chief Donald A. Martin of mishandling the situation for personal gain, claiming, “The Chief has, in our opinion, delayed addressing Mr. Budden’s complaints while using this case to generate publicity for himself. Chief Martin should focus on meaningful policing rather than inflaming minor disorderly persons charges.”The attorney further alleged that Martin’s actions were racially motivated, stating, “Our research has not shown a single press release for a disorderly persons charge on the police website this year. His decision to single out Mr. Budden, in our opinion, is self-serving and influenced by Mr. Budden’s race and celebrity status.”Budden has yet to make a direct statement on the charges. However, he has previously discussed conflicts with his neighbors on his podcast, claiming he was evicted for recording episodes of his show at his apartment. He also appeared to address the recent incident, attributing it to sleepwalking.“I just sleptwalk somewhere that I shouldn’t have sleptwalked,” Budden said in a recent podcast episode. “And you know how I sleep: butt-ass naked! Good naked sleepwalking—I just did it again,” he added with a laugh. The case remains ongoing, with Budden preparing to challenge the charges in court.Welcome to Spate Radio, ranked by Google as one of the top podcasts in the world!
