Creative Avengers Assemble! SDCC26 Week continues, and we pause to note that a record number of Black creators have been nominated for Eisner Awards this year: a total of 19 creators represented across categories not including collaborations and a lifetime achievement award, and including the first nomination for a Black female writer. In this episode, we are speaking to an all-star lineup of Black creators to explore this moment in time, but also to document and archive some of the stories that have led to this moment. Joining us are Joseph Illidge, Jean Michel, Chuck Patton, and Regine Sawyer! Regine discusses the role of women in comics, as well as intersections of identity in the industry. The panel contributors also discuss transformative work in their respective careers, including Joseph Illidge's work in Noir is the New Black, the upcoming Epiphany Engine multiversal title, and the historic creation of Milestone; Jean Michel's continued advocacy for the important role of the local comic shop and building creator connections with ComicBooked! and Black Comic Previews; and Emmy Award-winning creator Chuck Patton's groundbreaking forward movement in authentic character design across comics and animation. We explore the power of comics, the importance of representation, and our hopes for continued storytelling that breaks down barriers and allows all readers to see themselves reflected in the medium we love.
