Joe Roy Metheny: Did He Really Serve His Victims as Barbecue?

In the 1990s, Joseph Roy “Joe” Metheny became one of Baltimore’s most disturbing convicted killers—a massive, intimidating man who later claimed his crimes went far beyond the murders authorities could prove. Metheny was convicted of killing Cathy Ann Magaziner and Kimberly Lynn Spicer, and he was also convicted in a separate case involving the kidnapping and attempted sexual assault of Rita Kemper, who managed to escape and survive. After his arrest, Metheny began confessing to additional murders. He claimed to have killed as many as 10 to 13 people, including women involved in sex work and men living in homeless encampments around Baltimore. But investigators were unable to verify many of those confessions, and Metheny had previously been acquitted in connection with two other killings. Then came the claim that made his name infamous. Metheny said he had dismembered some victims, mixed their flesh with pork and beef, and sold the meat as barbecue sandwiches to unsuspecting customers from a roadside stand. It is a horrifying story repeated endlessly in true crime—but there is an important problem: authorities never independently proved that Metheny actually served human flesh to customers. His cannibalism story came largely from Metheny himself, a convicted murderer whose claims about his own crimes were not always verifiable. Metheny was sentenced to death for Kimberly Spicer’s murder, but that sentence was later overturned and reduced to life without parole. He received another life sentence for Cathy Magaziner’s murder. On August 5, 2017, Joe Metheny was found dead inside his cell at Western Correctional Institution in Maryland. He was 62 years old.
