ABOUT JOEY ALTMAN Growing up in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York, Joey discovered his passion for cooking at a young age in the kitchens of iconic resorts like The Concord and The Pines Hotel, where he learned the art of hospitality. Joey began his culinary journey in France, training under renowned chefs Bernard Constantin at Hotel Larivoire in Lyon and Jean Brouilly in Brittany. He further honed his skills at prestigious kitchens like Harvest Restaurant in Cambridge and Commander’s Palace in New Orleans under Emeril Lagasse. In San Francisco, he worked with Jeremiah Tower at Stars and eventually opened his own restaurant, Miss Pearl’s Jam House, in 1989. His career expanded globally, including culinary consulting projects and a key role in launching China Live, a celebrated Chinese restaurant in San Francisco. Altman is also a familiar face on television, having hosted shows like “Appetite for Adventure” and the James Beard Award-winning “Bay Cafe.” A passionate educator, he regularly teaches cooking classes and shares his expertise at top culinary resorts. For nearly 20 years, Joey has served 100s of clients via his restaurant consulting practice working with restaurants large and small for startups and turn arounds. Outside of the kitchen, he enjoys playing guitar, often performing at fundraisers in San Francisco.
