John 1: The Word Became Flesh -The Most Important Opening Chapter In The Bible And What It Is Saying

In this episode of Bible Chapter by Chapter, we walk verse by verse through John Chapter 1 — the opening chapter of the Gospel that begins not with a birth but with eternity, and ends with two young men staying with Jesus on a late afternoon they never forgot.The chapter opens with the Prologue — eighteen verses that are the most compressed theological statement in the New Testament. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Word pre-existed the beginning, was in relationship with God, and shared the divine nature. All things were made through him. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness hasn't overcome it — the Greek verb carrying the sense of neither overcoming nor truly grasping what the light is. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world didn't recognize him. He came to his own, and those who were his own didn't receive him. But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God's children. And then the sentence the whole Prologue has been building toward: the Word became flesh, and lived among us — tabernacled among us — we saw his glory, such glory as of the one and only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.Then John the Baptist — who he is not, and who he points to. I am not the Christ. Not Elijah. Not the prophet. I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness. And then: Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. The first title John the Baptist gives Jesus in this Gospel is not teacher or rabbi or prophet. The Lamb of God — evoking the imagery of sacrifice that runs through the whole Old Testament.Then the first disciples. What are you looking for? — the first words Jesus speaks in John. Come and see. Andrew finding Peter: we have found the Messiah. Jesus seeing Nathanael before they have spoken: before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.
