But when He enters the temple courts, He finds worship crowded out by commerce: animals being sold, money being exchanged, and God’s house treated like a marketplace.So Jesus acts.With measured, holy resolve, He makes a whip of cords, drives them out, pours out the coins, overturns the tables, and declares: “Do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.” The disciples later connect the moment to Scripture: “Zeal for your house will consume me.” (Psalm 69:9)The leaders demand proof—“What sign do you show us?”—but they miss what’s right in front of them. Jesus answers with a deeper sign than they can grasp: “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” He wasn’t talking about stone and buildings—He was speaking of His body, His death, and His resurrection.And then comes the sobering truth: many “believed” because they saw signs, but Jesus did not entrust Himself to them—because He knows what’s in the human heart. This episode presses us to ask: Is our faith rooted in Jesus Himself and His Word… or are we constantly demanding proof before we trust?Finally, the passage turns the mirror on us: if believers are God’s temple (1 Cor. 3:16; 6:19), then the same Jesus who cleansed the courts is still cleansing hearts—overturning pride, greed, compromise, and anything that hijacks worship. This is sanctification. This is mercy.
