John 2: The Wedding, The Temple, And The Faith Jesus Did Not Trust — What The Signs In John Are Really Doing

In this episode of Bible Chapter by Chapter, we walk verse by verse through John Chapter 2 — two of the most well-known episodes in the Gospel, placed side by side for a reason.The chapter opens at a wedding in Cana. The wine runs out. Jesus' mother states the situation and tells the servants: whatever he says to you, do it. Six stone water pots — set there after the Jews' way of purifying — are filled to the brim. The quantity is extraordinary — somewhere between 120 and 180 gallons of wine. But the quantity is not the point. The point is the word John uses: signs. A miracle draws attention to itself. A sign points to something else. And the ruler of the feast says to the bridegroom: everyone serves the good wine first, but you have kept the good wine until now. He thinks he is complimenting the bridegroom. He does not know where it came from. The disciples did. This beginning of his signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him.Then Jerusalem. The Passover is near. Jesus goes up to the temple and finds it filled with the commerce of sacrifice — oxen, sheep, doves, money changers. He makes a whip of cords and drives them out. Don't make my Father's house a marketplace. My Father's house — the claim at the center. He is acting as the Son with authority over what belongs to the Father. The authorities demand a sign. Jesus answers with a riddle: destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up. They hear the building. He spoke of the temple of his body. The disciples did not understand it then. After the resurrection they remembered — and they believed.And the closing that catches most readers off guard. Many believed in his name, observing his signs. But Jesus didn't trust himself to them — for he himself knew what was in man. They believed. He did not believe in them. Not cynicism — clarity. He knows the difference between the faith that holds and the faith that follows signs but goes no deeper. Belief based on signs is a start.
