John 4: Living Water — The Samaritan Woman, I Am He, And The Faith That Believed Before It Saw

In this episode of Bible Chapter by Chapter, we walk verse by verse through John Chapter 4 — the longest chapter in the Gospel so far, containing the most extended one-on-one conversation Jesus has with anyone in the entire Gospel of John.He needed to pass through Samaria. The word for needed — edei — is the word John uses for divine necessity throughout his Gospel. This is not geography. It is purpose. Jesus sits down at Jacob's well, tired from the journey, at the sixth hour — noon — the full heat of the day — the hour when no one comes to draw water. Except this woman.A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her: give me a drink. The request crosses two barriers at once — a Jewish man speaking to a Samaritan, a man speaking to a woman alone. She names the barrier immediately. And Jesus opens a different question entirely. If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you give me a drink, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water. The conversation moves from the literal well to something else — water that becomes in him a well of water springing up to eternal life, not drawn from outside repeatedly but arising from within.Then the turn. Go, call your husband. I have no husband. You have said truly — for you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have is not your husband. He is not condemning her. He is showing her that he sees her completely — the history she carries, the reason she comes at noon when no one else does. She perceives he is a prophet and changes the subject to theology. Jesus reframes the entire worship question. The hour comes, and now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.And then the first explicit I Am statement in the Gospel. I am he, the one who speaks to you. He tells a Samaritan woman at a well at noon what he will not say openly in Jerusalem until the very end.She leaves her water pot. Goes into the city she had been avoiding. Come, see a man who told me everything that I did. Can this be the Christ? The woman who came alone becomes the first evangelist in the Gospel. Many believed. And the Samaritans said: we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world. The ones furthest outside said it first.Then the nobleman whose son is dying — who believed the word before he saw — and went. The faith the Gospel is building toward is not the faith that watches signs and concludes.
