John 5: Arise And Walk — The Pool Of Bethesda, My Father Is Still Working, And Passed Out Of Death Into Life

In this episode of Bible Chapter by Chapter, we walk verse by verse through John Chapter 5 — the chapter where the signs of the Gospel produce their first serious confrontation, and Jesus delivers one of the most significant theological discourses in the entire Gospel of John.The chapter opens at the pool of Bethesda — a real place, archaeologically confirmed in Jerusalem — where a multitude of sick people lay waiting for the stirring of the water. A certain man was there who had been sick for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had been sick for a long time, he asked him: do you want to be made well? The man does not say yes. He explains the obstacle. Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up. The explanation has become the answer. The obstacle has become the identity. Jesus bypasses the pool entirely. Arise, take up your mat, and walk. Immediately the man was made well.It was the Sabbath. The first response to a man who has been unable to walk for thirty-eight years is a legal objection about carrying his mat. The controversy brings Jesus into his first direct confrontation with the authorities in Jerusalem. And his response opens the discourse. My Father is still working, so I am working too. One sentence — and it makes everything worse — because he called God his own Father, making himself equal with God.The discourse that follows is the most extended theological self-disclosure in the Gospel to this point. The Son can do nothing of himself but what he sees the Father doing. As the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so the Son also gives life to whom he desires. The Father judges no one but has given all judgment to the Son. He who doesn't honor the Son doesn't honor the Father who sent him. And the verse at the center: most certainly I tell you, he who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and doesn't come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. Present tense. Already.Then the four witnesses Jesus calls on his behalf — John the Baptist, the works, the Father himself, and the Scriptures. You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life — and these are they which testify about me.
