JOHN CAGE: 10 RULES FOR STUDENTS & TEACHERS

A beautiful window on a way of thinking and working, I'm grateful that Cage took the time to type out his "10 RULES." I USE THEM in my project THE CIRCLE IN THE SQUARE (www.cs-music.com). Students -- including myself -- learn to learn them heart in what we call step time, conducting and dancing the rhythms of the words until it seems totally 2nd nature. And, of course, with time, we go deeper into the RULES as meaning, where the RULES work, and where we might run into arbitrary limits or contradictions. It's a lot of good fun!
