在很多教养案例中，孩子的活动根本只是用来养成习惯，教孩子就像在训练畜牲，不像在教育一个人。孩子的本能就停留在原始的要快感不要痛苦的目标上，为了要感受愉快而不要失败的痛苦，他的行为必须合别人的意。如果不是这一类的教法，孩子便可真正参与共同的活动，孩子原先要快感怕痛苦的欲望也会修正。他不但会做出合别人意的行为，这行为在他心中激起的想法和情感，对别人也一样有推动作用。
