from San Antonio News Today | 2 Min News | The Daily News Now!
John Niland, the legendary three-time All-Pro guard who anchored the Dallas Cowboys’ historic 1972 Super Bowl win, has passed away at 82. A Pro Bowl staple from 1968–73 and a first-team All-Pro in ’69, ’71, and ’72, Niland was the immovable wall protecting Roger Staubach in that iconic 24-3 victory over Miami. Drafted fifth overall in 1966 from Iowa, he started 111 of 124 games over nine seasons and was later inducted into the Hawkeyes’ Athletics Hall of Fame. His legacy as a cornerstone of the Cowboys’ dynasty and a respected pillar of the NFL will forever be remembered.
