John-o-logue: NDSU-to-FBS, USD's coaching change

from Happy Hour with John Gaskins · host John Gaskins

All of a sudden, poof, they were gone.   On Friday afternoon, we found out South Dakota head football coach Travis Johansen took the defensive coordinator job at Rutgers and co-offensive coordinator Matt Vitzthum was immediately promoted to replace Johansen.    By the end of the weekend, North Dakota State had officially agreed to accept an invitation to the Mountain West Conference. By doing so, the Bison immediately left behind the Missouri Valley Football Conference and FCS landscape it had spent 15 years dominating, not to mention their rivalries with North Dakota, South Dakota State, and USD.   Two bombshell moments that blew the "State vs U" men's basketball game — and a thrilling one, at that — out of the state's sports spotlight.   Monday's Happy Hour with John Gaskins shines a bright light on both events.    What is Travis Johansen's legacy at USD after seven seasons overall and one as head coach? Who is Matt Vitzthum, beyond what the resume tells us?    It is difficult to imagine anyone who could better answer the latter question (besides Johansen) than Aidan Bouman. USD's record-setting quarterback the last three seasons worked closely with "Vitz" this past season, when Vitzthum was elevated from wide receivers coach to co-OC and quarterbacks coach.   Hear Bouman describe what Vitzthum's strengths, why "Vitz" was so popular in the locker room, and what kind of head coach Vitzthum will make.   Meanwhile, long-time Midco Sports television college football analyst Kurtiss Riggs — who has deep connections with coaching staffs at SDSU, USD, and NDSU — unloads his thoughts the Bison's move and what it means for the Jackrabbits, Coyotes, and the rest of the FCS.   Should SDSU and USD chase the FBS now? How does this affect recruiting in the Dakotas — with one already powerful program likely to attract more elite players from the region as the only school in the FBS?   Before the conversations, the Happy Hour host provides his reaction to the big events.
