Now I think it's difficult to downplay how much of a phenomenon this was at the time. Breaking the box office by becoming a billion dollar hit, it was a massive shakeup in the comic book fandom. This was in a time when trying to mimic the marvel formula was something DC were desperate to do. They'd reshot and re-edited several of their movies in order to give them a much lighter tone. However this showed that there's still a lot of love for these kinds of films which is how the movie went into production.
