©1998 Piper Verlag (P)2004 Lindhardt og Ringhof Mitglieder Bewertungen: I'd recommend this book but not it solely as the penultimate ... I remember reading the Outside magazine story when it first came out. The recent release of Everest (or reinterpretation) prompted me to read this as well as other books about the climbing season in question. Krakauer writes a compelling story but I personally question his version of the "truth". I'd recommend this book but not it solely as the penultimate source of information. Read the other accounts as well. Specifically "The Climb" by Boukreev. Gripping story of the tragic Everest ascent on which many ... Gripping story of the tragic Everest ascent on which many members of various climbing groups lost their lives. Author Krakauer luckily noticed the impending storm and managed to get off the mountain in the nick of time!! Gripping read. Couldn't put it down Really gripping story. At times I couldn't put this book down. I believe Krakauer did an excellent job of backing up his facts and represented what happened at Everest as best as he could. He seemed to have spoken to just about everyone at Everest and really got a good honest genuine picture of what happened. I truly appreciate this book at it was very eye opening and a learning experience for me. Very well written. It seems Krakauer has quite a number of critics out there but he is without a doubt a very great writer. one of the most amazing, exciting one of the most amazing, exciting, horrifying, detailed adventures I've ever read about. It truly is like being there....summiting Everest. I spent the next few weeks researching Everest, it's tragedies, etc after reading this book. It's a detailed account of an amazing yet deadly summit experience for a group of climbers. Fascinating and Engaging Account I found this book to be engaging, interest, and well-written. Sometimes nonfictional accounts can be too dry and fail to capture the personalities of the people involved, but Into Thin Air doesn't suffer from that in the slightest. The prose is rich and highly readable while the characterization is riveting. The book teaches the reader in great detail about the history of mountaineering Everest without getting too heavy or textbookish. I found myself unable to stop reading until I had reached the end. The only true disappointment to me was the epilogue or appendix during which Mr. Krakauer defends the validity of his book. I didn't realize when I bought the book, that it is highly controversial. It seems that most of the climbers dispute each other's memories of what exactly happened on that disastrous climb.
