Jonah and the Mercy of God - Episode 191

from Genesis Marks the Spot · host Carey Griffel

Jonah is one of Scripture’s strangest prophets—not simply because he disappears into the sea and is swallowed by a great fish, but because almost everyone in his story seems more responsive to God than he is. In this episode, we move into the prophets through the Book of Jonah. Jonah has already appeared in 2 Kings as a prophet of undeserved restoration for Israel. But when that same divine compassion reaches Nineveh, Jonah resists the mercy he already knows God is capable of giving. We follow Jonah downward: into flight, into the ship, into the sea, and into the fish. Along the way, the story begins to echo and invert Genesis and the flood. But Jonah also opens a larger question about what prophets actually do. Biblical prophecy is not merely prediction. It exposes the present, reveals where a path is leading, and calls for a response. Nineveh hears the warning and turns. Jonah survives the deep—but whether Jonah himself truly turns remains unresolved. Jonah knows that God is gracious and merciful. His problem is that he does not want God to be that God for Nineveh. And by the end of the book, that may be the question turned back on the reader.
