The Journey to the Cross – Week 11 “When The World Shakes” Mark 13:1-25Big Idea:In times of turmoil, uncertainty, and upheaval, Jesus calls us to stand firm in faith, remain watchful, and trust in His sovereign plan. Though the world may shake, the Kingdom of God remains unshaken.I. The Shaking of False Security (Mark 13:1-8)"Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left upon another, which will not be torn down." (Mark 13:2)· Fulfillment: In AD 70, the Romans, under Titus, took total control of Jerusalem, destroying the Temple, fulfilling Christ’s words exactly. THE TEMPLE FELL.“When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, don’t be alarmed. These things must take place, but it is not yet the end.” (Mark 13:7)· Historical Fulfillment: Between AD 30-70, there were earthquakes (ex., in Laodicea), famines (Acts 11:28), and regional wars.II. The Shaking of Persecution and Trials (Mark 13:9-13)“You will be hated by everyone because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.” (Mark 13:13)· Fulfillment: The early church faced intense persecution—executions under Nero (AD 64), betrayals by family members, legal trials (Acts 4-5). John was left alive after numerous attempts on his life until his exile on Patmos, almost exclusively as if to “bear witness.”· Ultimate Eschatological Reality: A final global persecution awaits the faithful before Christ’s return (ie. Rev 13:7, The Beast of the Sea).III. The Shaking of the Heavens and the Hope of His Coming (Mark 13:14-25)“When you see the abomination of desolation standing where it should not be (let the reader understand), then those in Judea must flee to the mountains.” (Mark 13:14)Highlight: Daniel’s prophecy of the abomination of desolation originally pointed to Antiochus IV Epiphanes, a Seleucid ruler who, in 167 B.C., desecrated the Second Temple in Jerusalem. He:· Set up an altar to Zeus inside the temple· Sacrificed unclean animals (pigs)· Forbade Jewish religious practicesThis event led to the Maccabean Revolt and the rededication of the temple (celebrated as Hanukkah).Fulfillment (AD 70): The Romans entered the Holy of Holies, set up pagan idols, and burned the Temple. - They had seen the Temple fall once before around Destroyed: 586 BC by the Babyloniansunder King Nebuchadnezzar II (2 Kings 25:8-10).- Be taken over in the Maccabean revolt as a result of Paganism in 167 BC. - It will fall for a second time and be destroyed in 70 AD as a result of the Jewish Revolt.- It will almost certainly be rebuilt a third time, leading into a “Final Days.” See Ezekiel 40-48, 2 Thessalonians 2:4 and Revelation 11:1-2.· Foreshadowing: This event previews the Antichrist’s ultimate desecration in the last days (2 Thess. 2:3-4).3 Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way. For that day will not come unless the apostasy comes first and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. 4 He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he sits in God’s temple, proclaiming that he himself is God.”“The stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.” (Mark 13:25)· OT Echo: Joel 2:31—"The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood."· Future Fulfillment: The final cosmic signs preceding Christ’s return (cf. Rev. 6:12-14).Conclusion: How Do We Stand Firm When the World Shakes?1. Shift Your Faith from the Temporary to the Eternal – Don’t build your life on things that crumble.2. Embrace the Shaking as a Call to Stand Firm – Trouble is not a sign of God’s absence but His work.3. Endure with Faith, Knowing Christ Will Return – This world will pass away, but His Kingdom remains.
