Jozef Tiso: The Priest-President Who Led Slovakia as a Nazi Puppet State

from World History: True Stories of the 20th Century · host World History

Jozef Tiso, a Catholic priest who became president of wartime Slovakia, led his country into collaboration with Nazi Germany during the Second World War.A Catholic priest turned president, Jozef Tiso led Slovakia into collaboration with Hitler’s Third Reich, transforming a nation once part of democratic Czechoslovakia into a loyal Nazi puppet state. Under his leadership, Slovakia enacted one of the harshest anti-Jewish legal systems in Europe—culminating in the Jewish Code of 1941 and the deportation of over 57,000 Jews to Nazi extermination camps. In public speeches, Tiso used religious justifications to defend the persecution and murder of Slovak Jews, famously declaring that removing Jews from Slovakia was “Christian self-love.” Tiso’s regime also sent Slovak troops to invade Poland alongside the Wehrmacht and later supported Nazi counter-insurgency efforts during the Slovak National Uprising in 1944. His government’s paramilitary wing, the Hlinka Guard, was complicit in crimes against civilians during the Second World War. Despite being a priest, Tiso embraced authoritarianism, crushed political opposition, and celebrated German military victories against Slovak resistance. As President of the Slovak State, he held full executive power—signing deportation orders and suppressing all dissent. After the war, Tiso was arrested, tried, and executed in 1947 for crimes against peace, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. His trial marked one of the earliest examples of postwar justice for collaborationist leaders. Tiso’s legacy remains deeply controversial—a man torn between faith and nationalism, who ultimately chose power over morality. This documentary investigates the rise, crimes, and fall of Jozef Tiso, examining how religious authority was weaponized to support fascism and genocide in the heart of Europe. This episode is part of the series High Ranking Fascist Collaborators: Politicians.Watch the full documentary and explore hundreds of historical films at:WorldHistory.tv
