The cultural backdrop behind the rise of Elizabeth Holmes was one of programs geared towards helping "underrepresented" groups, underrepresented in that they weren't statistically present enough at prominent levels of achievement, such as female leadership in traditionally male-represented industries. In this case, what helped push Elizabeth's story to the top, was the fact that she was a woman, breaking through the glass ceiling int he corporate world.
