Jude the Obscure Part 2 Chapter 3

In which the young and contemplative Jude attends a cathedral service to silently observe a certain singular young woman, Sue Bridehead, whose presence stirs a nascent tenderness within him amid the solemn liturgy and sacred psalmody. Meanwhile, Sue returns from a pastoral walk bearing a curious acquisition of classical statuettes, whose pagan forms provoke a subtle disturbance in her devout surroundings, as each sleeps apart beneath the watchful city clocks.
