Judy Chicago | Myths of the Goddess and Sustainability at the Serpentine Gallery

from Exhibitionistas: Notes on Art · host Joana P. R. Neves, art curator and writer

Who is Judy Chicago, beyond her status of feminist pioneer and powerhouse? Our two Exhibitionistas friends, art writer and curator Joana P. R. Neves and dedicated art lover and exhibition goer Emily Harding engage in an art conversation about the female American contemporary artist’s debut abstract works, up to the more figurative and activist art for which she is known. This is a retrospective exhibition, whose blueprint was a hitherto unpublished manuscript, Revelations, inspired by Illuminations and myths of the Goddess. Why is reclaiming myths a feminist action?  While attempting to showcase more drawing and be more sustainable, did her solo show at the Serpentine do her justice? What were the very drastic curatorial choices, and why did they puzzle the hosts? Did you enjoy the episode? Think about supporting Exhibitionistas by leaving a small donation: https://buymeacoffee.com/exhibitionistaEmily and Joana go on an exhibition walkthrough, and debate about the importance of the walks back to the tube, or whatever transportation you use. The two Exhibitionistas didn't always agree but such is the power of exhibitions and Art Wonderment: sharing diverging experiences. Their different stances touch upon an important issue: how effective is activist art? Does it affect the quality of the drawings and the paintings? What are the ethics of volunteer involvement in art-making under a single author’s name and signature? Sign up for a tiered monthly support: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2624749/monetization/supporter_settings Your contribution keeps us going.Joana and Emily also provide art student resources via a small introduction of the contemporary artist they focus on along with art banter, meditative explorations, and, often, feminist perspectives, with an attentiveness to issues of racism and eurocentric biases–they try to shift their perspective and are happy for you to extend your knowledge in the comments.  Expect: a colourful artist biography; art history musings; art theory and art language dissected or used in accessible ways; art wonderment in buckets; international art; thoughts on curatorial work; and art etiquette challenges…The show was curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, the artistic director of the gallery. For more information about the exhibition go here: https://www.serpentinegalleries.org/whats-on/judy-chicago-revelations/ Follow Judy Chicago on Instagram: @judy.chicago Music by Sarturn. Did the episode stir Art Wonderment memories? Exhibitionistas’ first year offered exhibition discussions with guest co-host Emily Harding; organically, it grew into a more experimental show exploring art topics, stories and interviews complemented by Joana’s publication Art Thinkosaurus on Substack. She champions ‘Art Wonderment’s’ embrace of complexity against the lure of ready-made opinions. A polyglot, she grew up in Lisbon, studied and lived in Paris, to finally settle in London with her artist husband, four children and two cats. Find us:On Instagram – @exhibitionistas_podcastOn Substack (NEWSLETTER: sign up!): Art Thinkosaurus > Exhibitionistas FilesOnline: www.exhibitionistaspodcast.comDo you want to be a guest on Art Etiquette?
