In the summer of 2005, a nature documentary about emperor penguins quietly opened on a handful of art house screens and proceeded to rewrite the business model for documentary filmmaking.On July 22, 2005, Warner Independent Pictures and National Geographic Feature Films expanded March of the Penguins into a wider theatrical release, building on a limited opening that had already generated some of the highest per-screen averages of any film playing that week. The American distributors had repositioned the French science documentary, filmed over 13 months in Antarctica, as an emotional story about family and survival, brought in Morgan Freeman to narrate, and aimed the release at a specific art house audience first. That audience told everyone they knew, and the film expanded from a handful of screens to over 2,500, grossed $127 million worldwide on an $8 million budget, and won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
