When I started Oz in 1966 on KPFK, Los Angeles' Pacifica station, all they were playing at night was dead Germans, Bach, Beethoven, Brahms et al. All of a sudden they've got this underground radio show on their hands every night and they're hearing music and listening to raps the likes of which they'd never heard before.David and I go back to those days and conjure the spirits of all the marvelous people who visited the show-The Byrds, Frank Zappa, Andy Warhol, The Buffalo Springfield, the Provos and, of course, the Firesign Theatre which was born on Oz.Oz named and invented the Love In and staged the first ever on Easter Sunday, 1967 in Los Angeles. We expected four thousand to show up and got forty thousand. "Something's Happening Here."Flash forward four and a half decades, and here we are on the brink of default, prisoners of little minds with grand plans to bring back the halcyon days of American Exceptionalism on the backs of the middle class and the working poor.
