July 25th, 2021 | The Goodness of Needfulness

from First Pres Orlando Sermons · host First Presbyterian Church of Orlando

Alexa Rossi |  The wisdom of the fifth commandment lies in the reality that human need is not a result of the fall. Very practically honoring the authority of our parents is correlated with our survival, which could be why this is the first commandment with a promise--that days would be long (full) in the land. Additionally by implying our created needfulness, this commandment invites all of us to practice humility, recognizing that God alone can meet all of our needs. In the living hope of Christ, parents are freed to bring attention to their shortcomings and sinfulness and model repentance; children are freed to honor their parents regardless of how deserving they are. Exodus 20:12
