July 30, 2026: Democracy at a Price

The Virginia Company of London did not create the first elected legislature in the Americas out of idealism. They created it because colonists kept dying and leaving, and they needed a reason for people to stay.On July 30, 1619, twenty-two elected delegates gathered in a timber church in Jamestown, Virginia for the first meeting of the Virginia General Assembly. The heat inside was severe enough that one delegate, Walter Shelley, died on the third day. The session passed tobacco quality standards and trade regulations. The same year, an English privateer ship sold a group of captive Africans to Jamestown settlers. Both facts belong to 1619 Virginia.The institution the Company built to solve a staffing problem kept meeting after the Company lost its charter in 1624, kept meeting after Virginia became a royal colony, and eventually produced George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and James Madison.
