JUNE 22 - Courage That Speaks3-Year-Bible Reading: Proverbs 18:13–14; 1 Samuel 24; Psalm 57, 142//3-Year Bible Devotional Book (Year Two) Available on Amazon//________________________________________“If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame. The spirit of a man can sustain his infirmity, but a wounded spirit who can bear?” — Proverbs 18:13–14 (ESV)“And David said to Saul, ‘Why do you listen to the words of men who say, “David seeks your harm”?’” — 1 Samuel 24:12 (ESV)“Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in You my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of Your wings I will take refuge, until trouble passes by.” — Psalm 57:1 (ESV)“I cry aloud to the Lord; I plead aloud to the Lord for mercy.” — Psalm 142:1 (ESV)________________________________________Have you ever felt hurt by someone, or maybe just misunderstood? Maybe a friend spread a rumor, or a teacher seemed unfair. It’s easy to react impulsively and say or do something we regret. Proverbs 18:13 reminds us that speaking before listening often leads to trouble. Even when our spirit feels wounded, God gives us the strength to handle it. In 1 Samuel 24, David had a choice: strike Saul in revenge or show mercy. He chose patience and faith in God’s justice, which preserved his heart and honor. Psalms 57 and 142 show us the power of turning to God in moments of fear, loneliness, and desperation. Prayer becomes a safe place to pour out our hearts honestly while trusting Him to fight for us.Life will bring challenges and people who hurt or misunderstand us. The key isn’t to avoid these moments, but to respond wisely. Listening before speaking, showing mercy instead of retaliation, and seeking God in prayer can protect our hearts and strengthen our character. Courage isn’t just about action; it’s about trusting God even when we feel weak, hurt, or unsure.________________________________________THINK ABOUT IT1. Pause Before You Speak: How can taking a moment to listen before responding prevent unnecessary conflict or hurt (Proverbs 18:13)?2. Choose Mercy Over Revenge: When someone wrongs you, what would it look like to respond like David, trusting God rather than seeking retaliation (1 Samuel 24:12)?3. Refuge in Prayer: How can you make praying like David in Psalm 57 and Psalm 142 a habit whenever you feel wounded, alone, or afraid?________________________________________BOTTOM LINETrue courage comes from patience, mercy, and trusting God with your hurt instead of reacting in anger.________________________________________PRAYERHeavenly Father, thank You for being my refuge when I feel hurt, misunderstood, or weak. Teach me to listen before I speak, to show mercy when others wrong me, and to pour out my heart to You in prayer. Strengthen my spirit so I can respond with courage, patience, and trust in Your justice. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
