Juneteenth: The Freedom They Never Delivered - June 19, 1865

On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger stood on a Galveston balcony and read eleven sentences declaring that 250,000 enslaved Texans were free. But the same order that announced their liberation told them to stay put, keep working, and look to their former enslavers as their new employers.
