Professora e ativista dos Direitos Humanos, Jurema foi a primeira deputada estadual negra do estado do Rio de Janeiro. Sempre ao lado da sua comunidade, no final dos anos 1970 fundou e presidiu a Associação de Moradores do Andaraí, na zona norte do Rio. A entidade, que nasceu para preservar a memória de um morador — um homem negro — morto pela polícia, tornou-se a motivadora de diversas mudanças estruturais na comunidade. "Batemos na casa de vários homens", rememorou, ao falar sobre a relação com a comunidade e o enfrentamento ao machismo. "Teve um que disse que nem pensar, que presidente da associação de moradores tinha que comprar briga com a polícia."  Listada como uma das mil mulheres indicadas ao Nobel da Paz em 2005, Jurema é a convidada do episódio desta semana do podcast "Escute as Mais Velhas".
