Juveniles on ankle monitors are committing violent crimes, and the judges don't seem to care

from Newell Normand

The Louisiana Supreme Court has ordered a second investigation into two New Orleans Juvenile Court judges after deadly incidents involving teens on ankle monitors. The case stems from two separate 2024 killings. An 18-year-old on a monitor killed a visiting tourist, and a 17-year-old on a monitor killed a local tour guide. The issue was already reviewed by the state Judiciary Commission, but the Supreme Court is now sending it back for another, deeper investigation. The key concerns are whether the juvenile justice system properly monitors offenders on ankle monitors and whether it has systemic failures that contributed to the killings. The Attorney General called the situation evidence of a “broken system.” The Judiciary Commission will reinvestigate the judges’ actions, and the Supreme Court will then review the findings and decide on any discipline or action. Jill Dennis, the founder of Complywise's Offender Management System & Vice President of the Association of Supervised Ankle-Monitor Providers, joins Newell to talk about the issue.
