JZ Brings Jazz ABC from School to Club

As a major typhoon system is about to hit Shanghai, JZ Club offered the city a Latino Jazz night at its Hengshan Road headquarters that was as educational as it was irresistible.Led by bandleader, saxophonist, flautist and vocalist Alec Haavik, the eleven-piece band brought together Chinese musicians and expats from Cuba, the United States and Puerto Rico, all based in Shanghai. Through a programme that wove live performance with informal talk, the ensemble traced the distinctive rhythmic pulse of Cuban music and charted the creative territory where Latin jazz meets bebop and swing.The result was a night that proved you don’t need sunshine to feel the dry heat of Havana.
