Kathryn Stothers: Mother of teen killed by a truck rolling through a stop sign on petitioning for stronger accountability for preventable deaths

The mother of an 18-year-old killed when a truck driver drove through a stop sign near Palmerston North is calling for stronger accountability.  The driver's pleaded guilty to careless driving causing Jade Evans' death.  He's been sentenced to two months' community detention, loss of licence, and must pay the family reparations.  Mother Kathryn Stothers has launched a petition asking to create Jade's Law, to reform road safety law.  She told Kerre Woodham that they want to close the gap so that if a serious breach of road rules results in death, the charge and sentence properly reflect the loss of life.  Stothers says it's not about making higher charges for everyone, but about giving the legislation, police, and courts a wider scope to charge appropriately when fundamental road rules, such as stop signs, are breached.  LISTEN ABOVE  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
