Kelpies: The Complete Legend of Scotland’s Shape-Shifting Water Horses | Scottish Folklore for SleepA slow, quiet retelling of the kelpie legend, made for falling asleep to.Every dark loch and slow-moving river in Scotland used to have one. That was the whole point of the story — not a single famous monster in a single famous lake, but something that could be in any water at all, including the stretch you walked past every day.It appears as a horse standing near the water's edge. A good one, usually: grey or black, well-made, apparently lost, and standing exactly where a tired person might think their luck had turned. The trap is in the mounting. Once you're on its back you cannot get off, because the skin holds you there, and it goes straight into the water. In some tellings it can take the shape of a person instead, and the only thing that gives it away is the weed in the hair. There are ways to beat it — a bridle, a name, in one story a farmer who managed to put it to work ploughing his fields — but mostly the stories end the way you'd expect.Underneath it is something very practical. These were told in places where children drank from and played beside water that killed people every year, and where a story was a more reliable fence than any actual fence. Half the folklore of northern Europe works this way once you look at it properly. The recording itself is the usual thing. A low, even voice, no music, no sound effects, nothing that rises or drops or suddenly arrives. Nothing in it is built to frighten you — this is a story about water and horses and old caution, told slowly enough that following along stops feeling necessary somewhere in the first twenty minutes. If you drift off by one loch and surface again by another, that's the intended use. Most people don't make it past the first half hour, and the rest will still be here tomorrow night.Put it on, turn the volume down, and let it go on without you.Mythology & Folklore for Sleep — long, calm retellings of Greek myths, Norse legends, Egyptian tales, Hindu epics, Chinese classics, Scottish folklore and old stories from around the world, made for insomnia and the hours when you can't sleep. Bedtime stories for adults, told in a slow, quiet voice. New episodes every day.
