Kenilworth Chapter II

In which a convivial evening at an inn brings forth stories of local characters both bold and troubled, mingled with the jest and jibe of merry companions over flowing cups; and the intrigue of a fair and secretive lady, observed by a bold mercer yet guarded by a surly master of the house, piques the curiosities of the listeners. Amidst convivial dispute and wagers of gallantry, the scene closes on a host’s lamentation of the follies of drunken revelry, as evening passes into sober dawn.
