Kenilworth Chapter III

In which a traveller named Michael Lambourne wagers to visit the reclusive and wealthy Anthony Foster, whose manor and character are marked by gloom and secrecy, while the discerning Tressilian, prompted by cautious curiosity, accompanies him to this dim retreat. They find Foster a surly and suspicious host, and after a tense welcome, Lambourne and Foster withdraw for private discourse, leaving Tressilian alone to ponder the strange meeting.
