In which the ancient halls of Cumnor Place are splendidly transformed into magnificent apartments, whose rich decorations and luxurious appointments reveal the tender affection of a noble lord for his newly recognised Countess, whose rustic beauty is heightened by the radiant glow of unexpected honour. Here, in the privacy of these splendid chambers, the Countess engages with her devoted attendant and a courtier named Varney, whose cautious discourse hints at delicate matters concerning a visitor called Tressilian, while anticipation builds for the imminent arrival of her lord and husband.
