In November 1963, South Vietnamese President Ngô Đình Diệm was overthrown and assassinated by his own generals. For decades, historians have debated the extent of the Kennedy administration’s role in the coup and whether Diệm’s death made America’s deeper involvement in Vietnam inevitable.
