Kentucky

Kentucky I left Kentucky when I was ten Trouble’s been following me since then You never know what’s around the bend But darkness won’t ever let me be My sister died ‘fore I was born Her shadows taller than the corn Mama tried running from the devil’s horn But he took her down and now he’s coming for me Can’t catch me I never knew daddy and I never asked why Thinking bout him only made mama cry But he and I must’ve had the same eyes I figured that might explain some things One night when she was too drunk to see And that house was no longer home for me I pinned a note on the old oak tree Mama it’s time for me to find my wings I’m leaving So I grew up hungry, fast and lean I learned how to get around sight unseen You don’t wanna get caught in the in between Where the dogs are waiting to tear you down One time near Phoenix almost went too far But I made it out with just a scar I slept too long in an old boxcar I knew better than to stand my ground I’m leaving Someday I’ll make it back to Kentucky There’s nothing there for me but an old oak tree I’ve been trying to make it back to Kentucky If I can ever stop running If I’m feeling lucky My nights these days are long and cold I’m way too young now to feel so old I’m looking for something that I can hold That ain’t gonna take me for another ride Now the sun is dark and the sky is red And I can’t stop running for to stay ahead If peace don’t find me before I’m dead Then I’ll make amends on the other side I’m sorry
