Kicking Foot Pain To The Curb: Podiatrist Dr. Andrew Cassidy on Fighting Plantar Fasciitis and Foot Pain

Dr. Mistry asks about common misconceptions regarding foot pain and what kinds of recommendations a good podiatrist would make for people who develop these issues. He explains that inserts--even custom inserts that seem high-tech--are often a waste of money and can even exacerbate the problem. Not only do inserts rarely address the biomechanical cause of the problem, but custom inserts also tend to capture the foot in the pathological position which contributed to the problem in the first place. A proper custom insert will be taken with a plaster cast of the foot aligned in its proper position and will be designed from the ground up to meet the foot. Finally, Dr. Cassidy explains what patients should look for in footwear to support foot health. He explains three main factors in finding the right shoe: 1. An enclosed heel with a stiff heel counter that holds that heel in good position. 2. A shank in the shoe that acts as a rigid lever--if you try to bend the shoe, it should only bend at the toes. 3. A wide and deep toe box.
