Kidnapped Chapter 17 - The Death of the Red Fox

In which the narrator, guided by an honest boatman, reaches the wild and sombre hills of Appin, where a chance encounter with the formidable Colin Roy Campbell of Glenure, known as the Red Fox, takes a sudden and tragic turn. Pursued by soldiers across the rugged mountain-side, he finds unexpected refuge with Alan Breck, whose urgent escape carries them both through the heath and birches in a breathless flight.
