Players start inside the square with a ball each. They must dribble around as many poles as they can in a set amount of time (usually 1 minute), avoiding other players. After 1 minute, call out “Stop” and all players should be able to put their foot on the ball. If the ball is too far away and they can't stop it straight away, this means the player hasn’t kept close control. Give those players a small task to do (5 toe taps on the ball) to encourage them to keep close control next time.Ask how many poles each player got around in the minute. Then see if they can improve on their next round.Call out different parts of the foot to use (ie “Soles only!” “Outside of the foot only” “Right foot only!). This all helps their development and confidence.COACHES NOTES:Players should have close control so that in a game defenders can’t steal the ball from them. Every now and then, walk around the square and lightly kick the kids' balls if the ball is too far from their body. This shows them how a Defender could steal it.Players should be regularly looking around so they can see where the next pole is and so they can avoid the other players.CHANGE IT:Encourage personal improvement - for example, can they get around 6 poles in 1 minute the first go? Then the next minute can they beat their last attempt and get around 8? Enjoy!
