Kilwa Sultanate

In this episode, we explore the rise, power, and legacy of the medieval Kilwa Sultanate, one of the most influential Swahili city-states on the East African coast. Drawing on ancient DNA evidence, oral traditions, chronicles, and archaeology, the episode traces Kilwa’s complex origins through the blending of Persian, Indian, and African communities around 1000 AD, while emphasizing the deep indigenous African roots of Swahili society.
