King Richard | BioPic Review and Reaction

We’re taking our first jump into scripted film territory.   Will Smith stars as the father, and sometimes coach of, Venus and Serena Williams in this 2021 “definitely-not-a-documentary” biographical film. Does the film do justice to the amazing rise of the Williams sisters or is it mostly a Will Smith film awards-baiting vehicle?   Is the film sending a message about overbearing “sports parents” or does it draw a line about future stars getting too much too soon? Is their success a triumph over racial boundaries? Was some amount of their suffering engineered by their father?  How much dramatic license was taken here?   We take a close look at this largely well-received film and try to sort out our feeling about the intent versus the execution.   Dean Saddoris of Caffeine & Kilos joined us in this discussion.
