King Solomon's Mines Chapter 3

In which our narrator arrives at Durban and deliberates thoughtfully upon the perilous expedition proposed by his new companions, setting forth terms for his services and assembling provisions, arms, and a trusted retinue for the journey. Among the servants comes Umbopa, a tall and enigmatic native with a proud bearing and a mysterious past, whose offer to join the party without payment intrigues and puzzles them all.
