Jesus teaches that we are blessed when we show mercy, but this isn't about earning God's favor through good deeds. The original Greek reveals that we show mercy because we have already received God's mercy, not to obtain it. Like a river that carries water from a higher source, we don't create mercy naturally but serve as channels for God's mercy to flow through us. Paul exemplifies this principle, having received mercy despite being a persecutor of Christians, which then enabled him to show mercy to others. Three practical ways to demonstrate mercy include protecting someone's reputation instead of joining gossip, forgiving those who have hurt us through prayer, and releasing debts others owe us whether financial, emotional, or relational.
