Kingdom of Luang Phrabang

In this episode, we explore the Kingdom of Luang Phrabang, a Lao monarchy that emerged in 1707 after the collapse of the once-powerful Lan Xang empire. We trace how the kingdom navigated centuries of pressure from larger neighbors, often surviving as a vassal state under Siamese and Burmese influence while preserving its royal traditions and regional identity. The episode follows Luang Phrabang’s turn toward France in the late 19th century as a way to escape repeated conflict and invasion, leading to its incorporation into the French Protectorate of Laos. We also look at the city’s lasting importance as the symbolic home of the Lao royal family, even after political power shifted toward Vientiane, and how the kingdom was eventually integrated into the modern Kingdom of Laos in 1947.
