Kinnah #11 - Yirmiyahu Lamented Over Yoshiyahu (Tishah b'Av 5783)
from Machshavah Lab · host Rabbi Matt Schneeweiss
Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text! This morning (7/27/23), after giving over my annual Tishah b'Av shiur at Shevet Achim (a.k.a. The Island Synagogue), I gave it over again on Zoom. This year's focus was Kinnah #11, which (I argue) is a contender for one of the most important kinnos, since it was instituted by none other than Yirmiyahu himself, a couple of decades prior to the destruction of the Beis ha'Mikdash. This kinnah required a considerable amount of background information about Yoshiyahu ha'Melech and the tragedy of his death. As usual, our mission was to tap into the emotional affect of this kinnah, and from there, to discern the path for national teshuvah. You can be the judge of whether we succeeded.-----מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר זמנים, הלכות תעניות ה:ארד"ק, רלב"ג, אברבנאל - ב' מלכים כג:כח-לרד"ק, רלב"ג - ב' דברי הימים לה:יט-כזרש"י - איכה ד:א,כתענית דף כב עמוד א-באיכה רבה א:נגעץ יוסף שםרד"ק - ישעיהו נז:חפרקי דרבי אליעזר יזמהרש"א חידושי אגדה - מגילה דף יד עמוד באיכה רבה הקדמה כבא' מלכים כא:כה-כו; כב:כט-להויקרא אבה כ:אBinyamin Lau, Jeremiah: The Fate of a Prophet, pp.67-68ישעיהו ו:י; נח:א-ייונה ד:י-----The Torah content for the month of July has been sponsored by the Richmond, VA learning community, “with appreciation for Rabbi Schneeweiss’s stimulation of learning, thinking, and discussion in Torah during his scholar-in-residence Shabbos this past June.” Thank YOU, Richmond, for your warmth, your curiosity, and your love of Torah!
